An archaeological evaluation and full scale excavation were undertaken at South Willesborough near the banks of the East Stour river in advance of a housing development. The work found evidence of Iron Age/early Roman occupation near the edge of the river. Some of the features at the site produced struck flint considered to be of a late Iron Age/early Roman date and it is thought that the site was used as a seasonal occupation site on the basis of burnt organic materials and hearth/oven features found at the site. The pottery recovered on the site and features comprised middle Iron Age wares, course Belgic style wares and Upchurch wares. An Iron Age cremation of an infant was also recovered at the site. Other features in the immediate area many well have been used for similar purposes in the late Neolithic/Bronze Age.
