Full Description
Evaluation trenching undertaken at Link Park in March 2001 on proposed foul sewer uncovered evidence for Bronze Age occupation. Evidence was found of a number of features which included the following:
A pair of ditches believed to be parrallel running NW-SE (there is a slight suggestion that the two might converge to the east). The western ditch measuring 1.9m across with steep sides and flat base and the eastern ditch measuring 1.4m across with a more rounded profile. A third ditch was found to the south of the parrallel ditches running approximately north-south, approximately 1.2m across with a rounded profile.
A shallow pit-like feature, the fill of which contained worked flint with associated flint tempered pottery.
A possible post-hole was found although it was not possible to assign a date.
To the NW is located a ring ditch and other cropmark features which may be associated with this site (TR 13 NW 13). (1)
Watching brief undertaken at Link Park in October 2001, following evaluation in March 2001 on proposed foul sewer uncovered further evidence for Bronze Age occupation comprising:
A ditch running north-west to south-east which may be a further element of the possible Bronze Age field system identified during the evaluation.
An oval pit or truncated post-hole, the fill of which contained worked flint and grog and flint tempered pottery. (2)
