Full Description
Watching brief undertaken at land to the rear of 68a High Street, Edenbridge, uncovered evidence of Medieval and Post-Medieval activity consisting of:
An early Medieval soil horizon, which dates to pre-thirteenth century.
Two phases of Medieval activity, the first of which consists of all feature cutting the early soil horizon layer, included: Four pits, either rubbish or cess pits and a short length of ditch. The Four pits and the ditch were sealed by soil deposit dated to c.1175/1200-1300.
The second phase consisted of ten pits and two post-holes, and represents a change in uses of the land, possibly from agricultural to industrial. This phase of feature dates between c.1200-1300/25.
At the western end of the site a length of wall foundation was exposed beneath a later 20th century boundary wall.
At the east end of the site was a sequence of brick wall foundations for a building which prior to this development was still standing. The building was built during or just prior to two dated deposits, dating between 1725-1825 and 1780-1825. (1)
