Monument record TR 15 NW 610 - Medieval Tile Kilns, University of Kent Campus
Summary
During evaluation work for a new accommodation block extensive areas of burnt roofing tile set in fire-reddened clay were found. These features were frequently defined, sometimes overlain, by linear featues with a northeast - south-west orientation. The features, unlike those found near Darwin College (TR 16 SW 15) are not orderly courses but described as tile "rubble" set in clay. The observed depth of one of the features was only 30cm. The kilns may have been demolished in the past or any remaining features could have been shorn-off during the 1960's landscaping. The linear features are more difficult to understand, but they could represent the edges of clay tanks or the wooden "boards for kilns" mentioned in Medieval documents relating to Tyler Hill/Hackington. A number of medieval pottery fragments were recovered of sandy Tyler Hill ware and represented plain and glazed cooking pots dating between 1250-1350. The peg tiles found were also fo medieval date similar to the Darwin College finds and date from 1275 - 1325.
