Full Description

Watching brief undertaken at Canon House in May 2002 uncovered activity at the site dating from the late thirteenth century to the Victorian period, comprising:

A pit, interpreted as a large waste pit associated with an early phase of occupation at St.Mary's College and Canon House. The pit was more then 3.2m wide and was filled with animal bone, oyster and cockle shell, an iron nail, medieval peg tile fragments and medieval pottery. The pit dates to the late thirteenth century.

A brick wall of late 17th to early 18th century date which is part of the foundations to a late Tudor building predating the canon House extension. In the late Victorian period the building was destroyed and the outbuilding extensions to Canon House erected in its place.

A Victorian ditch feature aligned north-south with steep-sided profile with a flat base. It was not possible to determine the extent of the ditch as it runs beneath the foundations of canon House. (1)
