Monument record TR 15 NE 419 - Late Medieval or Post-Medieval Pits Near Diocesan House, 26 Broad Street, Canterbury

Summary

Two pits containing pottery dated to the early 16th century and possibly date to the Dissolution. Two excavations carried out in 1992 at 'Diocesan House,' 26 Broad St, Canterbury for deep new foundations for office block extension. At the end of the early medieval period the site was again covered with horticultural soil. Essentially the area seems to have been used as a rubbish and cess disposal area by St. Augustine’s Almonry and nearby dwellings. From three pits excavated an extensive ceramics assemblage was recovered. Included in this was a rare example of a decorated stove tile of German provenance.
