Monument record TR 23 NW 242 - Romano-British Ditch, Hawkinge
Summary
Romano-British ditch revealed during topsoil removal prior to the construction of Hawkinge Primary School, upon an abandoned WWII RAF airfield.Set on a long curving axis, the ditch ran from the south-west to the north-east, surviving for a minimum of 1.15m in width, probably c.2m in width originally. It was traced for an overall length of 25.50m, with neither ends being found. The ditch fill consisted of a uniform acidic mid-grey silty clay, containg occasional flints, carbon and burnt clay specks. There was also a single basal pottery sherd, of a Southern Gaulish Samian ware dated to the second half of the first century AD. A collection of smashed pottery vessels were located towards the north-eastern section of the ditch. These probably represent a cremation group.
