Full Description
Romano-British ditch revealed during topsoil removal prior to the construction of Hawkinge Primary School, upon an abandoned WWII RAF airfield. The ditch could only be viewed in plan 0.55m below ground level due to the disturbance from a previous munitions searchbefore development. Set on a long curving axis, the ditch ran from the south-west to the north-east, surviving for a minimum of 1.15m in width, probably c.2m in width originally. It was traced for an overall length of 25.50m, with neither ends being found. The ditch fill consisted of a uniform acidic mid-grey silty clay, containg occasional flints, carbon and burnt clay specks. There was also a single basal pottery sherd, of a Southern Gaulish Samian ware dated to the second half of the first century AD. A collection of smashed pottery vessels were located towards the north-eastern section of the ditch (TR 23 NW 243). These probably represent a cremation group (1).
