Full Description
During excavations carried out by the Museum of London Archaeology ahead of development at Swanscombe Community School, a Roman enclosure was uncovered. This was rectangular measuring 35m N-S and 33m E-W with chalk and flint wall foundations. These foundations were 1m wide and 0.3m deep and were constructed using alternate bands of flint nodules and crushed chalk. The northern wall differed from the others and has been cut by a series of post holes. The interpretation is that most of the north side of the enclosure was re built with timber posts incorporated in the foundations, though it is possible that the posts may represent a fenceline enclosing the area during its later usage. A 3m entrance was noted on the norther western side of the enclosure. The importance of the site lies in the possibility that the enclosure may have some ritual significance. The pottery associated with this feature largely date to the first two centuries AD. (1-3)
