Monument record TR 36 NE 439 - Bronze Age-Early Iron Age occupation, Westwood Road, Broadstairs

In 1998 an evaluation was carried out by the Trust for Thanet Archaeology of the proposed site for a new ASDA supermarket. Two or more ditched enclosures were discovered, dating to the Bronze Age. An un-urned cremation burial was found in a ditch. (1)

In 1999 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology and Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out a strip, map and sample project on the site. Roundhouses, pits, postholes and ditches dating from the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age were found. The earliest feature was a Beaker period ditch. One feature dating from the Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age contained an Acheulian handaxe. This was a small flint handaxe of cordate type dating to the Hoxnian Interglacial-Wolstonian Glaciation periods. It could either have been found during the Bronze Age and kept or deposited in the ditch during field clearing. (2)
