Full Description
An early iron age farmstead represented by pits, postholes and a possible ditch. Fragments of pottery identified suggest that the site may have had origins in the late bronze age. Features found on the rest of the excavated site may represent scattered outliers.(1)
Excavation work in 2001 revealed further evidence for the field systems surrounding the putative farmstead. The area of site identified during the evaluation as being closest to the farmstead remained unexcavated during the work, preserved in situ. Prehistoric linear features, thought to represent an enclosure, pits and postholes were recorded in the other areas. The pottery recovered from these features was dated to the mid bronze age to early iron age. The report states however that due to nature of the assemblage, small, abraded pieces, much of it could be residual. The size of the assemblage does however suggest large scale activity on the site in the mid bronze age to early iron age [2].
Early medieval (TQ 97 SW 85) and Medieval (TQ 97 SW 86) activity was also recorded on site.
Desk based assessment of land north of site [3].
