Full Description

A length of ditch was discovered in the 1960s (feature F28 in the source). It was formerly inteprreted as possibly being military in nature but this is no longer believed to be true. The ditch, which was encountered at five locations across the site, was substantial, approximately 3m across and 2.7m deep. It was interpreded as being early Roman in date, likley 1st century. It was observed at five locations during the excavations at Springhead and appears to make a turn towards the south west in an area to the south of building 18. A second ditch was discovered immediately to the south of the first, it is likley that they are associated. (1) it is possioble that it is a continuation of one of the many ditches discovered to the north west during the excavations at Springhead and may have been either a roadside ditch or part of a property boundary.
