Full Description

Archaeological works on land adjacent to Lydden Lodge, Margate, recorded a number of undated features. During the initial evaluation an undated burnt soil layer, two undated linears and a series of undated linear plough marks were recorded in association with a medieval ditch (see TR 36 NE 444) [1].
The watching brief carried out ahead of development the following year, revealed further information about the archaeology encountered in the evaluation phase (see 1). An additional length of ditch and two features interpreted as pits were also recorded. Again, none of the features investigated contained any dating material, although they may by association be medieval in date. The new length of ditch recorded cut one of the possible pits. The watching brief concludes that all the undated features can be split into three phases. Phase one are the plough marks, representing an early phase of agricultural activity, on a different alignment to the later features. Phase two comprises a storage ?pit and one of the undated linears from the initial evaluation, which evidence from the watching brief suggests heads northwest before possibly turning southwest out of the development area. In the third phase a pit cuts the ditch from phase 2 and another linear, thought to terminate just inside the northern edge of the development area, cuts the phase 2 pit. The watching brief also showed that the medieval ditch thought to run through the evaluated area, was probably segemented and concludes on the basis of association, that the lengths of ditch recorded are parts of an enclosure(s) of medieval date (see TR 36 NE 444) [2].
