Full Description

A fragmentary linear cropmark has been identified in fields on the parish boundary between Acol and Monkton. This feature was recorded from aerial photographs taken by the Royal Commission on the Historic Monument of England as part of a project to identify and classify cropmarks across Kent. The cropmark appears to be associated with a ring ditch enclosure feature.(1)

The fragmentary linear cropmarks of a possible trackway (aligned WNW-ESE) located south of and running parallel to the Crispe Road. It can be traced for over 600m. At its eastern end are the traces of at least one retilinear settlement enclosures which could be associated with the trackway, both possibly of Iron Age or Roman date. This eastern area is marked by the cropmarks of numerous, presumed later pits. The entire site is visible on a range of aerial photographs: NMR 1660/477 16-JUL-1979, NMR 1660/457 16-JUL-1979, NMR 4137/69 18-JUL-1988, NMR 2176/26 03-AUG-1984 , Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 14-APR-2015, and OS/94013 V 119 10-MAR-1994. The site may be associated with a settlement and trackwys to the north-west : TR 26 NE 52. All these features have been mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024 (2-7).
