During the watching brief Two burnt mounds were found, represented by spreads of fire-cracked flint in an ash and charcoal stained silky matrix. The larger, westernmost mound was excavated and found to contain at least two phases of activity and a series of underlying structures in the form of several layers and pits, and most signifcantly a large section of an apparently circular ring-shaped feature associated with the earlier phase. Archaeological finds relating to the larger burnt mound included a decorated Middle Bronze Age pin, Iron Age potin coin, bone and teeth fragments, two undiagnostic struck flints and eight sherds of Middle Iron Age pottery. These finds were all recovered from the later phase of usage of the mound and the earlier phase may be significantly earlier in date. Samples were taken for environmental analysis (1).
