Monument record TQ 44 NW 57 - Medieval watercourse with associated features, evidence of probable nearby smithy, and post Medieval features

Summary

A substantial watercourse which possibly carried water to the moat of Edenbridge manor house, providing dating evidence for the digging of the moat between 1220 and 1250 and the early use of the manor was revealed during excavations along the route of the Edenbridge Western Relief road. Other features included further channels relating to water management. Metalworking debris was found, indicating that a smithy existed nearby in the twelfth to thirteenth centuries.
