Full Description
Archaeological work ahead of the widening of Corporation Street in the 1970's.
Trenches 6 and 7 were opened at the southern extremity of the site. Abundant building debris, including remains of clay walls with plaster keyed onto them indicated the proximity of a Roman building of considerable size.
A medieval pit, 3ft deep and 13ft long (c.1m by 4m) had been lined with planks and a row of substantial posts, presumably to support a superstructure. A mass of ash and burny clay may represent kiln debris. A few fragments of shell gritted pottery were also found. (1)
