Monument record TQ 86 NW 45 - Roman wooden building, probably a salt winning site

Summary

Remains of a wooden structure, represented by a large number of posts with traces of wattle walls, was revealed on the Upchurch Marshes. The prominent features were a short narrow corridor, possibly an entrance, and a large piece of collapsed wattle walling. A burial pot found outside the presumed entrance contained a puppy inhumation. Also found were a few pieces of tegula and box tile. Burnt layers observed earlier and since eroded away suggest that this was an industrial site. The dating of the burial pot suggests an occupation of late 2nd century.

Full Description

TQ84716959. (1) Survey in 1999 confirms a late 2nd century-early 3rd century salt winning site with substantial debris, and the remains of timber wattling and other timber fragments occasionally showing through mudflat silts. Also remains of ditch and possible pit feature (2). For site in context with others in inter-tidal zone, see (3).

Site identified during 2002 survey. There was no sign of a wooden building but RB pottery was scattered around (4).
