Full Description
TR 074489. Roman Settlement excavated by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust. Two Roman cremation burials were uncovered in May 1984 during topsoil stripping immediately south of Crundale limeworks, in an area shortly to be quarried. Extensive scatters of later Iron Age, Belgic and Roman pottery recovered from the topsoil mounds indicate the presence of an extensive settlement site. Potteryscatters were also noticed in ploughsoil associated with the 1982 extension to the quarry. Excavation, see plan, revealed one semi-circular and several linear ditches, post holes, a small second century cremation cemetery, and pottery and small finds dating from the early 1st to late 4th century AD. Work is still in progress. (1-2)
