Full Description
Fremlin Walk Phase I. Post medieval brick cellar walls and floor. Small finds, all post medieval in date, include: bricks, green bottle glass fragment, painted china, oysters, brick, tiles, iron slag, glazed (PMR) pottery sherds, 'tGw pot' and' tpw pot'. (1)
Phases 2 & 3 Cobbled floors, walls, drains, pits, post holes, cess pit cut by cirular brick lined soak away (C18-19th). Wooden coffin (post AD 1660), containing juvenile skeleton and wooden vessel. Small finds ranging from Roman to post-medieval were found (pottery, animal bone, shell and tile fragments) [NB This report only details features and not small finds]. (2)
Two post holes and a large pit dating to 1450-1550. Contained animal bone and mortar and a peg tile. Large pits containing brick, peg tiles, animal bone as well as one whole Spanish olive jar dated to 1550-1750. Clay pipe, post medievel glass phials, wine bottles. Mostly debris. One large pit filled with significant amount of clay pipes (whole and broken) as fragments of a smithingn hearth bottom, slag and hammerscale spheres. Several of the fragements were marked with a maker's stamp - 64 fragments were stamped with HH (H. Hunt) a maker in Maidstone (1845-7) and a single piece was initialled EM (Elizabeth Middleton) recorded a a pipe maker in Maidstone 1724-32. The Kiln does not seem to have been based on site, as only the wasters and industrial rubbish was dumped in the pit. (4)
3 post holdes and a large pit containing pottery AD 1450-1550. Sheet copper alloy of possible vessel AD1450-1550. A large pit containing 12 sherds of pottery AD1550-1575 and fragment of AD1800-1900 six-sided ink bottle. A fragment of a slip coated jug with 5 stab marks. Linear features containing pottery AD1450-1550 and AD1550-1725. Pits contained pottery AD1575-1700. Deposit cess containing pottery AD1575-1650 and virtually complete redware black glazed conical tankard, origin unclear. Linear feature containing a lid-seated jar AD1550-1725. Pit AD1600-1650 contained a red earthenware type 3 Martincamp broken flask. A well/soakaway and wall trench AD1550-1725. Pit dated by pottery AD1550-1700 containing fragments of leather and layers of leather fastened togther by wooden and metal tacks. Pit containing knife blade and Rim sherd of pipkin in Wealden type redware with copper alloy sheet. Individual burial with 2 sherds of pottery AD1200-1725 suggested burial date of post AD1660 - Schmorl's nodes in T6-10. Pit with pottery AD1635-1750 with Spanish olive jar of Goggin type C AD1575-1625. Pit dated AD1780+ containing fragment of European porcelain with Chinese appearance decorated in overglaze floral design painted in red and green. 2 sherds of pearlware and creamware and sherds from Frechen stoneware Bartmann Jug AD1600-1700 with amorial medallion. Pit AD1800-1900 containing a fragment of lower Rhenish slipware dish with marbled decoration. (3)
