Full Description
From the report:
"An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land at the Millworks, Brasted, Kent in September 2007 in advance of development.
8 trenches were excavated in total, revealing a small gully in Trench 1, a brick lined well in Trench 2, and three pits containing post-medieval finds in Trench 8. Heavy contamination of petro-hydrocarbons was encountered in the remaining trenches, along with deep layers of made-ground."
The gully in trench 1 (in the centre of the site) was probably associated with a water channel, probably associated with the water meadows that occupied the site in the late medieval and post medieval period. It contained several fills some of which contained medieval pottery (13th/14th century) and ceramic building material. The well in trench 2 (at the south of the site) was small and brick lined. Both the bricks and the mortar, and also the finds from the fill, suggest the well was of 19th century date. One of the pits in trench 8 (also at the south of the site) contained late medieval (13th/14th century) and post medieval pottery whilst a second contained roof tile from the same period. The third pit contained 19th century finds. A fourth feature in this trench was the concrete footing of a workshop or outbuilding.
