The excavation at Chartham Quarry was originally supposed to happen in three stages. The first one proceeded well, but the seond one delayed because of site conditions for two years. The third has, at the time of writing, still not been completed. The site contains several Saxon features, most notably Sunken Feature Buildings, (SFB) or Grubenhaus as they are known. There is also evidence of metal working, in the amount of slag discovered, as well as the discovery of two pits believed to have been used as part of the metal production process. Roman evidence was discovered, in the form of pottery, but it was found in the same contexts as the Saxon pottery, indicating that the pottery had been reused and then discarded. Prehistoric remains were discovered in worked and fire cracked flints, however these were impossible to date further than Prehistoric.
