An archaeological evaluation carried out in 2005 found evidence of medieval occupation dating from AD 1000 to 1400. A late medieval structure and post medieval draininge ditches were also found.

Pits and narrow linear gullies set back from The Slade and Bank Street were found to contain pottery dated to 1000 to 1400 AD. The earliest material came from pits that may have derived from properties fronting The Slade from 1000 - 1200. The majority of the pottery dated from 1200 - 1400 and was found in pits set back from Bank Street. A 15th century dwarf stone wall was found on the eastern edge of the site close to Bank Street. This would probably have fronted on to the market that was possibly located in Bank Street at this time. Some of the pits close to Bank Street contained industrial waste that may indicate metalworking on the site.

A post medieval ditch was also discovered that contained sawdust and worked timber together with 17th century pottery. A similar ditch was found behind the Corn Exchange building. These are interpreted as drainage ditches.(1)
