Full Description
During archaeological investigations including evaluation trenching and open area excavations at Dumpton Park in Ramsgate, features suggesting Iron Age activity were uncovered. These include two area of metalling and possibly some ditches. These were associated with finds of an Iron Age Date.
An extensive area of pebble and flint metalling was found across the northern corner of the North Area excavation. This sealed 15m. of the ring ditch already completely silted and also much of Grave 2. It covered an irregular area at least 13m. north-south and about 12,50m. east-west. It consisted of a single dense layer, 2-12cm in thickness, spread over the area and firmly consolidated to create a good surface. Much of its west side had been disturbed and was not still compacted, but an area near the northeast corner examined in detail was of solid construction. It extended across the very shallow Grave 2, where it lay only 2-3cm. above the remaining skeletal bones. It had in turn been cut by the late ditch. At the extreme south end of the site was a shallow ditch found in Trench 9 and its extension, this was partially sealed by a small patch of flint metalling on which was a spindle-whorl of likely Iron Age date. In the eastern excavation area it is possible that some of the diches identified were of an Iron Age date, for example the NW-SE aligned deep ditch which differs in scale to many of the other discovered at the site.
