Summary

A ditch, linear features, pits and post-holes containing mostly Roman 1st and 2nd century pottery were found at Brattle Farm. Some Neolithic/Bronze Age pottery and flint were also found.

Full Description

Ditch, linear features, pits and post-holes containing mostly Roman (C1st-2nd AD) pottery with some Neolithic/Bronze Age pottery and flint in the area of Brattle Farm.

Some Roman pottery found in the topsoil. The majority of finds found in ditch (298 sherds) and several post holes/linear features and pits across the site (another pit contained 252 sherd of Roman pottery from an estimated 40 or more vessels). Fragments of a Samian bowl.

Rim and base of a possible Neolithic/Bronze Age vessel. Single fragment of Bronze Age pottery found in another small pit/post hole.

Roman tile fragment (possible tegula?).

Fragment of daub.

Greensand rotary quenb fragment (beehive shape) found in one of the pits. Iron Age/Roman date.

Another pit reddened with heat contained charcoal and cereal grain fragments. Another post hole hole contained cereal grain and chaff fragments. Cereal grain included emmer, spelt chaff and some oats. (1)
