Full Description

The Iron Age segmented ditch and possibly associated pits and postholes on site D can broadly be paralleled by the structures and pits alongside a similar north-south boundary in Site G. As on that site, Iron Age features appear at present to be confined west of the boundary. The scatter of activity may be a continuation of the Early Iron Age activity seen at the very east end of site C, where four-post structures and pits were found, although the activity on Site D may be later. A similar deep segmented ditch of the Middle Iron Age was found at the west end of site B. Middle Iron Age ditches were also found on the CTRL 230 m to the sourth-west, and other undated ditches and a hollow way or trackway 180m, due south next to the Beaker burials.

The ditch also contained substantial numbers of flint flakes and other debitage, while similar material was largely absent from the Roman ditches. This may indicate Iron Age flint knapping, or may have important implications for the survival of earlier surfaces from which the flint was derived in the Roman period.

An Iron Age segmented ditch, probably with associated pits and postholes, has been recognised in the western half of the site, extending north of the later Roman enclosure. The gullies defining small enclosures to the east of the Roman enclosure, however are Roman. The date of the features within the Iron Age, and thus their relationship to the pits and four-post structures in Area C, is still unclear. None however contained very large assemblages of finds.
