Full Description
The evaluation established the presence of ditches, a pit and a hearth on site. All the features bar the pit were undated, but the fills suggest that the features date to antiquity and have been tentatively dated by association with the pit to the late prehistoric period. No archaeology was recorded in the centre of the site, though some of the recorded features may run across it.
Hearth filled with deposit of black charcoal.
Ditch-one ditch measured over 2m across and 1.5m deep, suggesting earthworks of size and importance. The scheduled site Boughton Quarry Camp lies to the north east of the site (TQ 75 SE 4).
Ditch terminus found in separate trench.
Pit: backfill of which contained three sherds from same (?) black burnished vessel and contain a quartz temper. The other sherd is coarser and heavily abraded containing sand and grit temper. Late prehistoric in date (Iron Age?). (1)
AOC Archaeology carried out a watching brief on the site in 2006 and 2007. A ditch and a pit were found, both dated to the late prehistoric period though neither produced any databale finds. (2)
