Monument record TQ 76 SW 118 - Bronze Age / Iron Age settlement at the Corn Field, Holborough Quarry

Summary

Archaeological fieldwork carried out between 2004 and 2005 found a small Bronze Age / Iron Age settlement consisting of enclosures, structures and a ring ditch (of uncertain nature). The origins of the site were probably in the early Bronze Age and use extended mainly to the early Iron Age although some evidence extended into the late Iron Age and early Roman period. Over 600 of the identified and excavated features were post or stake holes. The majority represent the post-settings of timber structures and buildings, ranging from possible 2, 3 and 4 post structures such as drying racks and granaries (or helms), up to large hut structures and structure groupings containing a hundred or more individual post-settings.

Full Description

In 2004 a trial trenching evaluation was carried out by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust in advance of residential development. 33 trenches were excavated, 10 of which (tr 2, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 20, 22, 24 and 25) produced archaeological features. Residual prehistoric pottery was found in trenches 6, 19 and 32. Several test pits were also excavated to assess the survival of palaeosoils but none were found.

25 features were provisionally dated to the late bronze age / early iron age (c.900 BC - 600 BC). These include a round house, represented by 7 postholes and a drip gully and a number of other features. There were also 12 pits (trenches 2, 11, 12, 15, 17, 22 and 25) , some of which contained domestic refuse and two boundary ditches (trenches 16 and 24). Three cremation burlals were also found in trench 15. The features were concentrated on the west of the site and may represent a settlement located on the upper slopes of Holborough valley on a site overlooking the river Medway.

Finds at the site included animal bone, daub, pottery, burnt flint and slag.

Two chalk extraction pits were also found dating to the mopdern period (c. AD 1850+) (1)

A subsequent excavation by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 2004 found features relating to a domestic site of the Late Bronze Age. Ditches, a roundhouse, four post granaries, rubbish pits and cremations were all found. Finds included pottery, butchered animal remains, carbonised remains of pulses and grains and clay loom weights. One pit contained a number of fragments of Ewart Park sword moulds. (2) Further features of simliar types were found later in 2004 and 2005 during later phases of fieldwork (3)
