Full Description

In 2002 the proposed site of the A228 roundabout and services bridge was excavated. Fifteen features including 2 ditches, a gully, 6 pits, a possible cremation, 2 possible post-holes and two shallow depressions were found. One ditch was thought to possibly represent a Roman field boundary. Fills of the pits which were largely composed of flint cobbles were thought to be the result of stone picking relating to ploughing of the surrounding land. A nearly intact upright pot was interpreted as part of a cremation burial disturbed by a later pit, the absence of cremated bones was put down to the soil conditions.

This was all interpreted as evidence of possible settlement activity near the site followed by later change in landuse to agriculture (1).
