Full Description

During an excavation ahead of the realignment of the A228, Middle Stoke, a number of medieval features were found. The earliest were two ditches forming a substantial boundary dated to the 13th century. A late 12th century coin, 13th century pottery and oyster shell and animal bone were found in these ditches.

Eight features were dated to the 14th century, mostly ditches and gullies but with two ephemeral deposits, one burnt, and a pit and a posthole. A simple copper alloy ring was found in one, along with pottery and oyster shells.

A ditch terminal was dated to the 15th century. A deposit of hillwash nearby contained pottery dating from the mid 14th century to the early 15th century. This was overlain by another which contained 15th and early 16th century pottery, oyster shell, animal bone and a residual flint scraper. Another ditch terminal contained 16th century pottery. (1)
