Full Description

Area one of the Brisley Farm development was excavated between 25 May to 25 June 1999. Finds were not as prolific as with other areas, although Roman and later medieval features were identified, including one ditch of Roman date, two large pits with evidence of in situ burning and a further c.20 pits and postholes of similar date. Some evidence for a track of Roman date. (1)

From ASE entry:
Evidence of medieval activity has been found at Stanhope. Amongst the features found at the site was a section of ditch which had been later partly filled in to allow access to a stone-paved track. Also found at the site was evidence of other medieval activity in the form of irregular, shallow cut features. Evidence of late iron age/early Romano-British occupation (TQ 94 SE 38) has been found in the same area and further medieval activity found to the south east of the excavation site (TQ 94 SE 37).

Follow up excavation to earlier evaluation trenching revealed medieval features. Near the north-west corner of the excavation site, a section of ditch, approx 1.7m wide, running east-west was found. This had been later partly filled in to allow access to stone-paved track running roughly north-south. The track petered out after about 6m although the line of the track was indicated by a shallow irregular ditch which continued along its eastern edge. To the west of this was evidence of other medieval activity in the form of irregular, shallow cut features.

Evidence of LIA/ERB occupation (TQ 94 SE 37) has been found in the same area and medieval activity found to the se of the excavation site (TQ 94 SE 38). (2)
