Full Description

An area in the southern half of the western field evaluated in 1990 ahead of quarrying found a late 1st to early 2nd century cobbled trackway 7m wide and aligned north-south. This overlay undated features, including gullies and pits. The trackway was flanked by ditches, both containing 2nd century pottery. The trackway was sealed by a layer containing much late 2nd, 3rd and 4th century pottery and tile. Two coins were also found, one silver denarius of Elagabalus dated to 218 to 222 and a bronze coin of Constantine II dated 320 to 325.

East of the trackway was an area of crude late 1st to early 2nd century cobbling. This was sealed below a layer containing 2nd century and later Roman pottery and tile.

A hearth was found containing two 1st century sherds of pottery. A number of Roman pits were also found. A second trackway was orientated east-west and dated to the late 2nd century, it too was 7m wide and had flanking ditches. (1)
