Monument record TR 34 SW 919 - Roman or medieval field ditches, Whitfield

Summary

Three ditches were found during an evaluation in 2004. They did not contain any material other than presumably residual prehistoric flints. They were below the subsoil so clearly of some age. It is thought they are probably of medieval date but a Roman date cannot be ruled out, especially given the presence of a nearby site of this date.

Full Description

Three ditches were found during an evaluation in 2004. They did not contain any material other than presumably residual prehistoric flints. They were below the subsoil so clearly of some age. It is thought they are probably of medieval date but a Roman date cannot be ruled out, especially given the presence of a nearby site of this date. A pit was also found but it too did not have any dateable material within it.

The ditches were between 0.5m and 1.25m wide, and 0.15m and 0.22m deep. The pit was 1.2m long, 1.25m wide and 0.25m across. (1)
