Full Description
Rectangular enclosure located between Cliffe and Ryestreet, visible as cropmark on aerial photo of 1990.
80m across.
The cropmark traces of a possible Iron Age or Roman settlement mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. The site comprises a large ditch defined rectilinear enclosure at TQ 7436 7634 measuring approximately 62m x 78m with an asymmetrical annex attached to its southern side and a further incomplete rectilinear enclosure to the east of these. A possible trackway defined by the two western enclosures on one side and the third enclosure on the eastern side extends north-south through the site, continuing for c.110m to the edge of the current field. Within the main large enclosure are the cropmark traces of two adjacent pits which may have held posts.
Two Iron Age coins have been found in the vicinity of these enclosures (NMR Monument Number:416702), possibly associated with the site.
The cropmarks of the enclosures were seen on aerial photographic imagery on Google Earth which was taken in April 2007. (1)
