Full Description

Excavation by Archaeology South-East in 2008 at Kingsnorth Road, which found the continuation of the Westhawk Farm site.

The Early Roman period (AD40-100) is shown by ditches, pits, and post-holes. (This corresponds to 'Period 2, Phase 2' and the beginning of 'Period 2, Phase 3' at Westhawk Farm.) One of the ditches was substantial, with a width of up to 4m. This could be a defensive ditch relating to the earliest phase of Roman occupation, though more probably it relates to the initial drainage of the area. Other ditches were less massive and interpreted as drainage or boundary ditches, mostly on a WNW-ESE alignment. A large number of pits dating to the same period were found: some were used as refuge pits; others are of unknown usage. Post-holes were found, though in no distinguishable pattern.

Later Roman activity (AD120-200) is more sparse, and is shown by a probable boundary ditch and a single pit. (This relates the end of 'Period 2, Phase 3' and 'Period 2, Phase 4' at Westhawk Farm.)
