Full Description
(TR 15315773) Two main periods of Roman occupation; the first at the end of the first century, the second in the fourth were revealed when two small trenches were dug opposite St Pauls's Church by the Canterbury Excavation Committee in 1951. The earliest deposit consisted of Belgic ploughsoil. In one trench Roman pits were emptied. Two of these yielded Flavian pottery and the third a coin of Gallienns (c260-268). The gravel floor of a late 1st century timber structure was found in the second trench. This was sealed by a second floor. A deposit of dark loam containing 4th century material capped the second floor. A possible late Roman hut and a number of other features cut this loam deposit and were subsequently sealed by a further deposit of dark loam containing 4th century material. Trench 1 produced two possible late Saxon pits, one late 13th century pit, one 15th century and two modern pits. A thick deposit of dark brown soil containing 12th and 13th century pottery sealed the Roman levels in Trench II. One pit and a posthole cut the deposit. The features and the deposit were sealed by make-up and a clay floor of 14th century date. (1)
