Full Description

[TR 1418658241] The remains of the grave of three Roman burials and a Roman pot together with a part of a large linear feature, probably a ditch were discovered in a small excavation undertaken during the lowering of a basement at 8 New Street in 1978. The burials are probably associated with the large Roman inhumation cemetery in the St Dunston's area. The fact that the three burials are set closely together implies that they were in the area of the cemetery proper, rather than on the fringe. These graves, taken together with other burials found in the vicinity, indicate that the cemetery covered a considerable area. The relationship of the ditch to the graves is unknown (see TR15NW/35).
