Full Description
(TR 14945796. Sited from OS 1:1250 1974). Belgic huts, Roman street, building and pits were discovered when two trenches were excavated by the Canterbury Excavation Committee in the cellar of No 3 Palace Street in 1952. The earliest features consisted of three successive Belgic houses. Part of an early Roman street metalling aligned north-east to south-west sealed the early levels. This metalling was bordered by the robbed-out foundations of a large 3rd century masonry building. A number of pits cutting the early metalling may have been post pits for a timber colonnade possibly associated with an early timber building. (1-2)
