Full Description
[TR 13415340 - sited from map] An air photo of July 1959 revealed, on Swarling Manor Farm, an enclosure about 230 ft. square with a smaller one, 60ft. by 40ft. on the south side (TR 15 SW 26). Test excavations, in 1960 showed a wall of earth and flints 24 inches wide, 6 inches high, built over and along an earlier V-shaped ditch, 44 inches deep by 7 ft. wide at the top, tapering to 18 inches. The ditch was traced for some 215 ft., the wall following it and overlapping at the end. B.Philp suggests that the site is that of an early Romano-British Villa which replaced a Belgic hut in the mid-1st c, A.D.; the finds included a Roman roofing tile and several sherds and about 150 Belgic sherds, besides domestic refuse. (1) The site lies above a gently southerly slope within a freshly- ploughed field. At TR 13405340 a patch of finer, lighter-coloured soil probably marks the area of excavation but a search of the ground produced no finds. Mr. Collard, owner of Swarling Manor Farm, could offer no further information. (2)
