Monument record TQ 56 NW 48 - Ditch and two pits containing Iron Age and Romano-British sherds

Summary

During gas-pipe trenching two pits and a ditch were revealed. The adjacent spoil-heap produced only pot boilers and a flint flake. The second pit, probably similar to the first, produced three worn potsherds of Iron Age or early Roman date and a badly corroded Potin coin. The pottery and the coin probably date from the 1st century AD. The ditch was 20ft wide and deeper than 6ft. Adjacent spoil produced a sherd of Samian and of Patch Grove ware along with flint flakes and pot-boilers.
