Monument record TR 26 NE 80 - Romano-British pits, Monkton

Summary

Two flat bottomed pits were found during work to lay a pipeline in a field to the south west of Monkton roundabout. The pits contained midden material of Romano-British date and they are most likely associated with a further number of Romano-British features previously identified at the site. It is suspected that a number of graves may also have been revealed at this location during the construction of the pipeline trench.

Full Description

TR 285655. Located to the nearest fifty metres. Romano British remains. Site no. 144. (1)

Two flat bottomed pits with vertical sides containing midden material. They were 1.20m deep, by 3.20m and 1.10m wide. Some features exposed may have been graves. They were located close to several pits and ditches containing Iron age and Roman material, it is possible that the pits form part of the settlements that date to these periods. (2-4)
