Monument record TR 26 NE 61 - Rectilinear enclosures and associated features with a possible Iron Age or Roman date, south of Monkton Roundabout

Summary

A complex of rectilinear enclosures was identified from aerial photgraphs to the south of Monkton Roundabout. These have a possible roman date and may be associated with roman pits and findspots which were uncovered during excavations in the area uring installation of a pipeline in the 1980s.

Full Description

Rectilinear enclosure complex with south side apparently following the curve of a path or track.

A complex of rectilinear enclosures was identified from aerial photgraphs located just to the north of Monkton by the roundabout. The south boundary of this complex appears to abut onto a curvilinear feature, possibly a trackway. There are also three other linear features and what appear to be the remains of a number of pits. It is probable that these features are associated with a number of Romano-British pits and ditches found at this location during the construction of a pipeline in 1982 (see TR 26 NE 81). (1)

RCHME AP shows 2 rectlinear enclosures (1 incomplete), abutting a curvilinear feature. 3 other linear features, 1 at the W. end of the curved feature. GCE TR 2852 6545. (2)

Possibly associated with TR 26 NE 81.(3)

Enclosures forming part of a settlement of Iron Age/Roman date were visible as a cropmarks either side of Willetts Hill. The enclosures are bounded to the south by cropmarks of an east-west oriented curvilinear trackway. The eastern end of the trackway falls within the area of scheduled monument 1018880. Numerous pits inside the enclosures are also visible as cropmarks, at least two of which are sub-rectangular in form and may represent the positions of buildings with a sub-floor cut into the bedrock chalk. These features were mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. (4-8)
