Monument record TR 26 NE 81 - Early Romano-British pits/ditches, Monkton
Summary
A group of pits or ditches were uncovered during work to lay a gas pipeline near Monkton roundabout to the north of the village. Fragments of the upper stone of a rotary quern of Neidermending lava were found from the fill of these features. Later Iron Age (Belgic) and Romano-British pottery sherds were also found and the assemblage of Roman wares was dated to the period from cAD 65-85. This assembalge comprised a number of local wares and some imported materials.
