Monument record TR 26 NE 131 - Romano-British pit and associated finds, near Monkton roundabout

Summary

A pit containing midden material and a Roman bronze coin were found during work on a water main in 1987. Also removed from the pit were a number of pottery sherds of mid to late 1st century date, and fragments of tegulae, or Roman roofing tiles. The tiles were seen as indicative of a building close by. A linear cropmark was also observed at this location and this may possibly be the remains of footing trenches or a boundary ditch. The precise location of these features is uncertain due to some contradictory information in the original record from the Isle of Thanet Sites and Monuments Archive.
