Full Description
A number of cropmarks have been identified in fields to the north of Monkton roundabout. Amongst the features are a staple enclosure, two rectilinear enclosures, a ring ditch and to the south a pit and curvilinear feature. These features appear to overlap a broken linear feature running across the area (see TR 26 NE 108). There are two ring ditches along this trackway to the west and a further number of ring ditches and maculas are known in the area.
Staple enclosure at TR 2871 6580 and 2 rectilinear enclosures, conjoined. Abutted by large ring ditch, pit and curvilinear features at TR 2865 6575. Superimposed on broken linear feature (see TR 26 NE 108) which continues at TR 2855 6586 with 2 superimposed ring ditches, one with internal pit feature. 4 ring ditches (1 double-ditched) and 2 macula features spread across area. Enclosures and a trackway forming part of a settlement of Iron Age/Roman date were visible as cropmarks in NMR 2639/3127 01-AUG-1985. The trackway articulates with the north-east corner of the northern enclosure. Fragments of two enclosures to the south are associated with sub-rectangluar pits that may represent the sub-floor of buildings cut into the chalk bedrock. The northern enclosure has at least two small sub-circular pits in its interior. These features were mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024 and include some of the features described by authority (1) (see also MKE16093) (2)
