TR 370476. An Iron Age and Roman site at Wood Hill, Kingsdown Wood, Nr Kingsdown. In the 1970's during fieldwalking Mr Jonathan Joy discovered over 700 sherds of flint-tempered Iron Age pottery from an area on the south side of Wood Hill, Kingsdown (see TR 34 NE 19) (Illustration Card No 1). Nearly one thousand Belgic and Roman sherds were also found. In 1982 the Dover Archaeological Group excavated a series of 30 trial trenches in the area in an attempt to locate the Belgic-Roman site indicated by the pottery scatter. One Iron Age feature was discovered along with 67 further sherds. The feature was a pit which measured 0.97m in diameter and 0.27m deep. The pit contained 38 sherds of Iron Age pottery and was located at TR 37084753. As regards the pottery, the pedestal base no.5 may be dated to c.500-350 BC. Example seven may be dated c.350-200 BC. (See illustration card no.2). This indicates two probable periods of occupation. The finds along with the site records are located in Dover Museum. (1) Gullies and two ditches of Roman date were discovered at the site. The pottery was mainly of the first and second centuries and contained many sherds of Belgic ware. Later pottery, including Oxfordshire ware was also found. The site is thought to be that of a native-type farmstead. (2)
