Full Description
TR 36414907. A medieval ditch and two Roman Pits were discovered in the Winter of 1980/81 when the Dover Archaeological Group undertook a watching brief along the line of a new water main being laid by the Southern Water Authority between Oxney Bottom (TR 3570 4706) and Walmer, Deal. A ditch (feature 9) cut by te main road 317m SW of the Ripple Road Junction. It ran in a north-southn direction and was 1.15m wide and sloping sides and a flat base (see illustration card 1.1). The fill, a brown clay loam produced one sherd of a glazed medieval sandy ware and seven sherds of Iron Age date. It seems likely that the ditch represents an old field boundary. Two other pits probably of Roman date were also found in this area (see illus card 1-2 and 1-3). The finds are in Dover Town Museum. (1)
