Full Description
TR 326566. A Neolithic/Bronze Age site of considerable importance seems to be indicated along the line of the new Sandwich By-pass. The site was exposed in lat 1978 in a large roadside drainage lagoon excavated by the contractors in 'Harp' or 'Shoulder of Mutton' field. The lagoon appeared to cut through a silted-up 'lake' or broad stream, filled with a grey-brown clay. At the base of the silt there was an occupation layer with an associated ditch. Several hundred struck flints and a few pieces of pottery 'mostly undateable' were recovered from a series of one metre wide trenches and a sample area excavation 8m x 4m dug in the base of the lagoon. The flints are of Neolithic/Bronze Age type. Limited sampling of the clay soil indicates that seed remains are present in some quantity. (1)
