Full Description
TR 3475 5135 Belgic and Romano-British site, Great Mongeham, near Deal. In 1980 trial-trenching around a new duck-pond whose digging had produced some 40 sherds of Belgic or early Roman pottery, located three sides of a ditched rectangular field-enclosure measuring 39 m by at least 25 m apparently replacing a rather larger predecessor. Another ditch earlier than the second ditched enclosure was traced for 58 m. Of a number of other pits, ditches and gullies examined, one pit was cut into the top of the early field-enclosure and produced a late Roman Oxfordshire mortarium sherd. Nearly 1000 sherds of pottery, mostly of Belgic to early Roman type were recovered, mostly from the early enclosure, suggesting occupation to the later 1st century. Similar pottery was recovered c. 250m NNW in 1939 (see TR 35 SW 12). The site appears to be a native farmstead of pre-conquest origin. Over 300 fragments from small, crude, cream-pink ceramic vessels tempered with chaff, probably a form of briquetage, were recovered. (1) A brief note on the work in progress at Great Mongeham. (2) Briquetage (vessels for drying salt) fragments were found at Great Mongeham. For an example see illustration card. (3)
