Full Description

During an excavation in 2007 by Wessex Archaeology pits and ditches were found, dating to the Middle and Late Bronze Age. One pit with a charcoal-rich fill contained fragments of two large and one small vessels, all Deverel-Rimbury, along with flint working debirs and a piece of briquettage. Base and decorated body sherds, from at least three globular and two bucket urns, were found in the uppermost fill of the same pit. These fragments probably belonged to the latest part of the Deverel-Rimbury ceramic tradition.

11 features, pits, ditches and hollows, were dated to the Middle/Late Bronze Age. These contained flint-tempered pottery. One ditch ran across the area and was traced for 22m, continuing beyond the northern limit of excavation. It was up to 1.4m wide and 0.4m deep. It contained numerous pieces of burnt and worked flint, animal bones and flint-tempered pottery. Three of the pits contained sherds from vessels that appeared to have been deliberately deposited, one, a sloping shouldered jar was found inverted. (1)

These excavations are collated and summarised in a January 2015 'Publication Report' by CgMs. The report makes concluding interpretations of the different phases of occupation at the site but these are far too detailed to summarise here. See Source Ref for further information. (2)
