Full Description
TR 370692. A Roman building, pits and ditches were excavated by the Thanet Archaeological Unit at Sacketts Hill, Broadstairs and St Peter's (sic) in 1985. A report is in preparation. (1) TR 370691. This site was discovered during earthmoving for road works in 1985. See illustration card. FEATURE 1. A depression cut into chalk and sectioned by roadworks. NE-SW the section was 11.30m across. In profile the NE edge of the feature shelved gently from natural chalk surface to a depth of c1.40m. From this 'floor' the south west side rose steeply. The nature of this feature is conjectural; it could be a chalk working ora ditch meant for defence. In the flat floor of the feature at AREA Ba shallow pit was observed. This was lined with burned earth and contained burnt flints. The fill yielded artefacts and sherds of Saxo-Norman pottery. The datable material from AREA A cannot be used to establish the age of FEATURE 1 whcih may be much older. FEATURES 26,7,10,11. These were pits of different sizes and depths cut into the chalk and filled with midden material, bones, shells, burnt flint etc. The pot sherds from the fill included fragments of flagons, beaded-rim urns and Samian were including a cup of Drag Form 27. The infilling can be dated to A.D. 70. FEATURES 3,8. These were ditches of V and truncated V section, c0.9m wide and up to 0.6m deep. A few sherds were found similar in type and fabric to those from FEATURES 2 to 11. FEATURE 9. A flat-bottomed pit or possibly the end of a ditch. Contents were as for features 3 and 8. FEATURES 4,4A and 5. These were ditches of U section c0.8m wide 0.34mdeep. No pottery or other artefacts were found Cepae nemoralis predominated in the snail population, no Helix aspersa; hence these features could be prehistoric. Though Sackett's Hill has an imposing display of cropmarks, they have been little investigated archaeologically. Worked flints including Neolithic scrapers have been picked up in Sloe Lane near the site. Sackett's Hill was the centre of a farming complex form the 14th century. Once a private railway line of the site extended down to Dane Court Road. (2-3)
